Moeller High School finished second in the Greater Catholic League-South last season, which is a decent accomplishment considering St. Xavier has won every season since the Kennedy Administration took office in 1960. The Crusaders won the Mason sectional, were second to the Aquabombers at the district meet and sixth at the Division I state meet.
A key cog will be missing for Moeller as GCL-South Swimmer of the Year Cooper Hodge has graduated and is parting the waters for the Wisconsin Badgers. However, veteran coach Bill Whatley does return a core of key performers.
"We have three swimmers with state experience," Whatley said. "Austin Theobald has signed at Miami University."
Senior captain Theobald was 16th last year in the 500 freestyle at the Division I state meet, with senior Will McCullough on the fifth place 200 freestyle relay team and junior Justin Davidson on the third place 200 medley relay team.
At the district meet, junior J.C. Prugh was 14th in the 100 backstroke and junior Austin Murphy was 14th in the 100 freestyle. Other district qualifiers were senior Adam Gieseke, junior Thomas Batt and sophomore Eli Wagner.
In the GCL South, McCullough and Davidson were on the first team 200 freestyle relay, with McCullough also on the second team 200 medley relay and making second team in the 50 freestyle. Theobald and Davidson were on the GCL South second team 400 freestyle relay.
"We also have our first diver at Moeller in years in freshman Gavin Osterday," Whatley said.
Moeller's 24 member squad opens up 2017 Jan. 3 at Lakota West. They host the Moeller Invite at Powel Crosley YMCA on Jan. 7.
