KENWOOD - Most years, Cincinnati sends a team from one of the divisions to Huntington Park in Columbus. Since 2010, Moeller High School and Lakota East have won Division I titles, with the Crusaders winning three crowns. Just last season, La Salle won the Greater Catholic League-South and narrowly missed an Ohio Division I championship with a 2-1 loss to Pickerington North.
As always, the Moeller Crusaders are a factor as winners of four of the last six GCL-South titles. Tim Held's crew won Division I state championships in 2012, 2013 and 2015. They were 20-9 a year ago for their 13th consecutive 20-win season and return GCL-South first teamers Christian Bault and Sebastian Fabik as seniors along with second team infielder Jack Gallagher and catcher Tyler McDonough who is a junior.
Fabik was All-Ohio honorable mention, hitting .348 with two homers and 19 runs batted in. The lefty had a 5-1 record on the mound with a 2.67 ERA and 37 strikeouts in 39.1 innings.
"We return a lot of experience with the four starters," Held said. "They were on the field every day for us last year. Our senior pitching looks to be very solid this season with Fabik, Jake Kies and Logan Sabo. Offensively, we should have better team speed. The experience should help us early in the season against our tough schedule."
Fabik has already signed with Ohio University. Juniors Tyler McDonough and Cameron Swanger are verbally committed to Missouri.
